Jim Safley:
Digital Archiving & Web Programming
Home | CV | Portfolio | Writings | Contact

Welcome. Here you will find my CV, my portfolio, some of my writings, and contact information. This minimalist website design reflects my conviction that simplicity is a virtue -- in both life and technology. Content should not drown in context.

Presently I work for the Center for History and New Media, a division of the Department of History at George Mason University. The Center offers an innovative approach to the traditional historical paradigm by applying new technologies to the study of history. It uses digital media and computer technology to democratize history -- to incorporate multiple voices, reach diverse audiences, and encourage popular participation in presenting and preserving the past.

My primary responsibilities at the Center are as digital archivist and web programmer. As digital archivist I apply traditional and digital archival principles to the collection, preservation, and presentation of digital materials. My programming duties include designing and developing online content management systems, databases, search engines, display mechanisms, and related scripts, integrating PHP, MySQL, XHTML, CSS, Javascript, Linux, and Apache.

I am currently a graduate student in history at George Mason University . My primary interests in history are American cultural, social, and technological history, with an emphasis on American liberal tradition, social justice, and progressive thought.
